CAMP ICHIGAYA - Japan -- U.S. Army Japan, U.S. Army Pacific, the Royal Australian Army, Japan’s Ground Staff Office (Japan Ground Self-Defense Force), and the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command partnered for the 2019 Megacities Conference at the National Institute For Defense Studies at Camp Ichigaya in Tokyo July 16-19. Attendees heard from experts on the growing challenges and threats to megacities and the need for a well-coordinated military, civil, and government agency response plan. There are 22 of 38 megacities in Asia, including Tokyo, so having key players at the conference was critical to share lessons learned from past disasters as well as building relationships with key responders and planners. Topics ranged from multi-domain recovery approaches and leveraging artificial intelligence, to humanitarian support in combat zones and securing megacities during major world events like the upcoming 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
