U.S. Marines with 3rd Assault Amphibian Battalion, 3rd Marine Division, pull the transmission from an assault amphibious vehicle at Hokudaien Training Area, Hokkaido, Japan, Feb. 3, 2020. Northern Viper is a regularly scheduled training exercise that is designed to enhance the interoperability of the U.S. and Japan Alliance by allowing Marine Air-Ground Task Forces from III Marine Expeditionary Force to maintain their lethality and proficiency in MAGTF Combined Arms Operations in cold weather environments.
