The Anunu is an endemic plant (Sicyos Macrophyllus) to Hawaii Island and on the verge of extinction. US Army experts at Schofield Barracks and Pohakuloa Training Area are actively growing new Anunu from seeds harvested in 2016. The significance of this effort is the reintroduction of native Hawaiian plants into their natural habitat by natural resource team from the US Army, University of Hawaii, and Colorado State University. While much of this work goes unnoticed, the team of cooperators and Army civilians will preserve a species on the brink of extinction and do so under the umbrella of the plant's natural habitat. The US Army is required by law (NEPA 1968) to manage and preserve plant and animal species that are threatened and endangered.
