The loading and transporting of a hypobaric chamber from Tyndall Air Force Base (on Friday, August 21st, 2020) symbolizes progress toward two ongoing operations—the overall Air Force mission to “fly, fight, and win” as well as rebuilding Tyndall as the ‘Base of the Future’ in the wake of Hurricane Michael. A hypobaric chamber was removed from ‘Hangar 2’ on the flightline side of the base Friday morning, August 21st. The chamber is important for Air Combat Command functions because it replicates a high altitude environment. A hypobaric chamber—or “altitude chamber”—is used during aerospace or high terrestrial altitude research or training to simulate the effects of high altitude on the human body. The removal of the chamber allows for demolition of the hangar to press forward. The ongoing 4.9 billion-dollar Tyndall rebuild is expected to last five to seven years. The chamber is being relocated to Joint Base San Antonio—Lackland in San Antonio, Texas.
