201001-N-CR202-1001 PACIFIC OCEAN (Oct. 1, 2020) Nimitz-class nuclear aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) conducted flight deck certification (FDC) and carrier air traffic control center (CATCC) certification while underway. This was the first underway during which Vinson and Carrier Air Wing 2 operated together since the ship completed a 17-month maintenance period and retrofit in August, during which the ship underwent a complete restoration and system retrofit to accommodate F-35C Lightning II mission capabilities. During the underway, Secretary of Defense Dr. Mark T. Esper conducted an official visit aboard Vinson. During the visit, Esper toured the ship's composite warfare commander spaces, receiving in-depth briefs on carrier strike group interoperability and naval power defense.
