Leading into World War II, the Marine Corps initially tried a one-piece coverall to protect other garments underneath. They later found the one-piece coverall was not practical due to the tropical heat; with the spread of dysentery, it was more cumbersome to remove the coveralls and attached gear when nature called. The two-piece garment was more practical, and this style has continued to the present day.
