Cathay Williams was the first documented African-American woman to enlist into the U.S. Army at a time when woman were barred from military service. She posed as a man and went by the name, William Cathay, serving in the 38th Infantry Regiment, an all-black unit known as Buffalo Soldiers. (U.S. Army National Guard video by Sgt. Terry Rajsombath)
