Video by Petty Officer 3rd Class Ethan Soto

Navy Public Affairs Support Element, Det. Northwest

Alicia Higgs, a biologist from the Naval Station Everett Environmental Department, and biologists from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), record and measure fish in the waters surrounding NSE, Washington May - June 2021. The NSE Environmental Department has a proactive role in meeting mission requirements, while protecting our Puget Sound environment where Navy and Marine Corps forces train and live. NOAA Fisheries is responsible for the stewardship of the nation's ocean resources and their habitat.
They start these surveys by circling nets around certain parts surrounding NSE and pulling them in manually. Afterwards, they search the nets for fish and gather them in a bucket. They bring the specimen onboard and begin to identify, measure and check them for tags from hatcheries before releasing them back into the water.
