A YOUNG SOLDIER FROM YUMA IS WORKING TO PROTECT BILLIONS OF DOLLARS WORTH OF CARGO IN THE MIDDLE EAST... WHILE PROVING THAT DIVING IS NOT JUST FOR THE NAVY AND COAST GUARD
-PKG (trt 2:08)-
AS THE EARLY MORNING MIST ROLLS ACROSS SHUAIBIA (shway-bah) PORT IN KUWAIT THINGS SEEM TO BE A BIT QUIET
NAT POP diver splash
BUT BELOW THE SURFACE THERE IS PLENTY OF ACTIVITY AS ARMY DIVERS ON LOAN TO THE FIVE NINETY FITH TRANSPORTATION BRIGADE START TO LOOK FOR MINES OR IMPROVISED EXPLOSIVE DEVICES
STAFF SERGEANT TEVIN CURRY IS THE DIVING SUPERVISOR... BUT HE WON'T TOUCH THE WATER ON THIS MISSION. INSTEAD HE TRUSTS THE TASK OF CLEARING I-E-D'S TO A YOUNG PRIVATE FROM YUMA ARIZONA.
SOT SSG Tevin Curry, 74th Dive Detachment " He's efficient when he is in the water he still has a lot to learn but that is to be expected at somebody from his level but he shows that enthusiasm that makes me want to be a better supervisor and makes me teach that much more when I see Soldiers come and show that willingness to learn. "
STANDUP BRIDGE- Paul Harris, Army Public Affairs "Right now it is about a 115 degrees out here on the pier, there is low visibility in the water but those aren't some of the biggest challenges these divers will face. "
Pvt. Isidro Guzman, Army Diver "Trying to stay hydrated, if I am being honest. Even in the water you would think we cool down a bit but once we are swimming and finning our buts off down there to try and get this quaywall searched for any IED's or any foreign objects we are trying to get in and out. Be proficient in there so I'd say that is probably my biggest obstacles is staying hydrated and staying cool."
A SHIP MOVING THROUGH THE PORTS IN KUWAIT COULD POTENTIALLY LOAD/OFFLOAD HARDWARE AND SUPPLIES WORTH BILLIONS OF DOLLARS.
IT IS NO SURPRISE THAT COLONEL RICARDO SIERRA ...WHO RECENTLY TOOK OVER COMMAND OF THE FIVE-NINETY-FITH... WANTED TO PERSONALLY SEE THE DIVERS PERFORM THEIR CRAFT.
Col. Ricardo Sierra, 595th Transportation Brigade, "Private Guzman the diver right now in the water he is an example of the strength of our Army. He is not here by himself, he has his section leader, his squad who made all the checks to make sure he is successful at his mission. Total confidence on him."
THOUGH ARMY DIVERS ARE JUST ONE ELEMENT IT TAKES TO MOVE CARGO IN THE MIDDLE EAST, ADD THEM TO THE MIX OF ENGINEERS, CIVILIANS AND SOLDIERS AND YOU HAVE SOMETHING THE MILITARY LIKES TO CALL "TOTAL FORCE INTERGRATION"
Col. Sierra "This is a good example of how we project power worldwide"
FOR THE 595TH TRANSPORTATION BRIGADE... I'M PAUL HARRIS
