ARABIAN GULF (Dec. 7, 2021) Capt. Karrey Sanders, commodore of Amphibious Squadron (PHIBRON) 1, presents Capt. Kelly Fletcher, commanding officer of the amphibious assault ship USS Essex (LHD 2), with a relic of the USS Arizona during a ceremony in remembrance of the 80th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor aboard Essex, Dec. 7. Essex and the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit are deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations in support of naval operations to ensure maritime stability and security in the Central Region, connecting the Mediterranean and the Pacific through the western Indian Ocean and three strategic choke points.
