On Dec 7, 1941, just before 8 a.m. Hawaiian Standard Time, Japanese forces launched a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, an American naval base located in Honolulu. Fighter planes dropped bombs and torpedoes, destroying or damaging nearly 20 American naval vessels, including eight battleships and more than 300 airplanes. The very next day, President Franklin D. Roosevelt delivered his famous Day of Infamy speech, marking the United States entrance into World War II.

    Bonus Fact:

Construction began on Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Cherry Point in November 1941, just 17 days before the attack on Pearl Harbor. This expedited construction on Cherry Point. The installation would then be a primary location for training for service to the Pacific theater. During 1943, MCAS Cherry Point also served as a base for anti-submarine operations in the Atlantic.
