Jon Bernstein, Curator of Arms and Armor at the National Museum of the Marine Corps, and Shanna Daniel, an archaeological conservator at Naval History and Heritage Command, discuss the discovery, history, and conservation of an M1 Garand Rifle found during a Prisoner of war/missing in action (POW/MIA) recovery mission on Makin Atoll. The rifle was located among the remains of U.S. Marine raiders from the Makin Island Raid of August 1942 and has been conserved to bring its story to the public.
