Denise Krepp, Director of the Director’s Action Group at the Naval History and Heritage Command, speaks with Dr. Darlene Iskra, the first woman to serve as commanding officer of a commissioned U.S. Navy vessel, during a virtual interview to commemorate Women’s History Month. Iskra ascended to command on the USS Opportune (ARS 41), a rescue and salvage ship, in 1990. Krepp and Iskra discuss some of her major accomplishments during her 21-year naval career and the many glass ceilings she broke along the way.
