2022 marks the 78th anniversary of operation "MARKET GARDEN" that liberated several Dutch towns from Nazi-German occupation during WWII.
Operation Market Garden was an Allied military operation during the Second World War fought in the Netherlands from 17 to 25 September 1944
Code-named Market Garden, the offensive called for three Allied airborne divisions the “Market”part of the operation to drop by parachute and glider into the Netherlands, seizing key territory and bridges so that ground forces the “Garden” could cross the Rhine
Market would employed four of the six divisions of the First Allied Airborne Army. The U.S. 101st Airborne Division, under Major General Maxwell D. Taylor, would drop in two locations just north of XXX Corps to take the bridges north of Eindhoven at Son and Veghel.
Garden consisted primarily of XXX Corps and was initially spearheaded by the Guards Armoured Division, with the 43rd Wessex and 50th Northumbrian Infantry Division
The main force of the 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment and elements of the 326th Airborne Engineers Battalion were the first to land at drop zone A
The 502nd PIR were assigned with the task of capturing the Dommel bridges at Sint-Oedenrode, the bridge at Best over the Wilhelmina canal to protect the landing zone(s) at Son.
The 506th PIR had to capture the bridge over the Wilhelmina canal at Son and move further south to Eindhoven and secure four bridges over the Dommel river.
With the corridor at Eindhoven and Son being cleared of enemy troops, the entire 101st Airborne Division now set up new positions around Sint-Oedenrode and Veghel.
Until the end of September the 101st Airborne Division was put into action to keep their sector clear of enemy forces
