Dr. Dan Sternlicht, Naval Surface Warfare Center Panama City Division (NSWC PCD) Distinguished Scientist for Littoral Sensing Technologies, briefs his “Pioneers in Seabed Imaging: NSWC PCD’s Dr. Julius Hagemann and the SHADOWGRAPH Sonar” presentation, Sept. 28.
The SHADOWGRAPH system evolved from a 1954 proposal by Dr. Julius Hagemann for a fixed-beam, side-looking, high-resolution sonar to be carried in a towed vehicle that flew 15 feet above the ocean bottom. This is the first known example of sidescan sonar technology, which would modernize mine hunting and revolutionize our understanding of the ocean depths.
