Michael Daly resigned from the United States Military Academy in 1942, after only attending for one year, to fight in World War II. As an 18-year-old private, he participated in the Omaha Beach landings on D-Day while serving in the 1st Infantry Division. After being wounded in Germany and recovering, Daly was reassigned to the 3rd ID and received a battlefield commission.
In 1945, 1st Lt. Daly commanded Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3rd ID. While in command on April 18, 1945, his unit was attacked by overwhelming German forces. The actions Daly took, including the destruction of three machine-gun nests, prevented his company from being destroyed and enabled American forces to seize Nuremberg, Germany. The following day, Daly was shot in the head, but survived. In the hospital, Daly was promoted to Captain and received the Medal of Honor.
