The Lithuanian Army’s Iron Wolf Brigade was front and centre at the country’s biggest military exercise, along with eight other NATO Allies.
Synopsis
One of Lithuania’s largest military exercises is underway, gathering nine NATO Allies, namely Belgium, Czechia, Germany, Lithuania, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, the United Kingdom and the United States, for intense training at Pabrade Training Ground from 17 to 30 October 2022.
The exercise, which involves more than 3,500 troops, tests the ability of the Lithuanian Army’s Iron Wolf Brigade to carry out defensive operations and counter-attacks. NATO’s German-led multinational battlegroup based in Lithuania is participating, as is a US Army battalion assigned to Lithuania on a rotational basis.
The Distinguished Visitors (DV) day of the exercise was attended by Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda and King Philippe of Belgium.
Footage includes various shots of Belgian troops in armoured vehicles practising manoeuvres alongside German tanks, and Lithuanian troops. Interviews with the Lithuanian Chief of Defence, as well as German and Belgian Army officers.

“The exercise Iron Wolf shows that we are combat-ready, and with this combat readiness we show that we can deter – and if deterrence fails, we are ready to fight for the Lithuanians, for and with our NATO partners, and defend the NATO eastern flank. We are ready for this.”
(06:46) SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH) – GENERAL VALDEMARAS RUPŠYS – CHIEF OF DEFENCE OF THE REPUBLIC OF LITHUANIA
“Today, we see the, first of all, the cohesion of NATO, I would say. We have possibility, or we still have the possibility to see how our NATO troops are united for the same task, to be prepared to defend NATO area, or defend NATO states as Lithuania, and Lithuanians we feel really protected because the Allies are deployed on Lithuanian soil.”
(07:24) SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH) – BELGIAN ARMY 1ST LIEUTENANT ‘JULIEN’ – PLATOON COMMANDER
“It’s very important for us to work with other countries for two important reasons. First, it’s the Alliance, Alliance of Europe, of NATO, here in this country. But what is most important for us on the ground is that they have capabilities that we don’t have. For example, the German tanks, it’s a very good weapon, a weapon system, that we don’t have in Belgium. So working with them can save lives, literally.”
