United States Air Force Gen. Mike Minihan, commander of Air Mobility Command, presents Air Medals to a 99th Airlift Squadron aircrew during a SAM Fox Reunion event at the base theater on Joint Base Andrews, Md., September 30, 2022. The Air Medal is awarded to U.S. and civilian personnel for single acts of heroism or meritorious achievements while participating in aerial flight and foreign military personnel in actual combat in support of operations. The medals were presented to the 6-man aircrew in recognition of their actions to resolve an inflight emergency shortly after their C-37 aircraft took off on a DV mission Oct. 30, 2021. On that day, their aircraft experienced a severe bleed air leak shortly after takeoff which caused smoke and fumes to engulf the aircraft. The aircrew maneuvered the aircraft through a safe, heavy-wight, emergency landing at night and in poor weather conditions, without further damaging aircraft or injuring the 10 passengers and 6 aircrew.
