Ethan Thomas, an Engineering Technician for the Engineer Research and Development Center's Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory, was on Treat Island, Maine as part of a weatherization study. Treat Island has the highest tides on the East Coast in the United States. Thomas and his team come out to the island placing metal panels with different coatings to get covered by sea water twice a day to see how they handle the weathering situations. The team also put up a self-sustaining weather station equipped with solar panels, back-up battery, and video cameras which can send constant observation of the panels to the Hanover, New Hampshire based lab. Treat Island is a one of a kind government controlled property where only the government is allowed to be there.
