Naval Oceanography in coordination with CTF-52, Helicopter Mine Countermeasures Squadron (HM) 15, Teledyne Technologies Incorporated, Sequoia Scientific, Inc. and the Naval Oceanographic Office (NAVOCEANO) dropped a slocum glider out the back of a helicopter as part of a proof of concept. NAVOCEANO currently employs Teledyne gliders to collect oceanographic data and this development allows rapid and widespread deployment capability for the gliders and reduces the workload/dependency on ships. Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command directs and oversees more than 2,500 globally-distributed military and civilian personnel who collect, process, and exploit environmental information to assist Fleet and Joint Commanders in all warfare areas to make better decisions faster than the adversary.
