Coast Guard personnel recount their response to a case from Dec. 22, 2022, in which an MH-60T Jayhawk helicopter air crew from U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak, Alaska, located and hoisted three men and dog who were stranded on rocks in high-wind conditions near Esther Island, Alaska, May 1, 2023. Coast Guard Sector Anchorage command center watch standers received the initial distress call from the survivors aboard the 45-foot fishing vessel Privateer over VHF-FM channel 16 at approximately 11:55 a.m., who stated they had donned survival suits and were preparing to abandon their vessel, which was getting slammed against rocks.
