World Metrology Day is an event occurring on May 20 in celebration of the International System of Units. The date is the anniversary of the signing of the Metre Convention in 1875. Naval Surface Warfare Center, Corona Division celebrates this event and metrology, the study of measurement, through which it supports America's warfighters.
NSWC Corona's Measurement Science and Engineering Department serves as the Technical Agent for the Navy’s Metrology and Calibration (METCAL) Program (TC AC03). In this role, the department ensures that measurements made on Navy systems or weapons during all phases of the acquisition lifecycle, from research through sustainment, are accurate and meet the Navy’s needs. The scientists and engineers represent the Navy’s subject matter expertise in measurement science and in that capacity provide technical assistance to Navy programs and the Fleet by assessing measurement requirements and developing technical processes and advanced measurement standards necessary to meet the requirements. MS also provides Weapons Interface Engineering Assessment (TC AC05), Strategic Weapons Surveillance and Testing (TC AC07), Test Systems Assessment, and Fleet Maintenance System Assessments. The department’s unique facilities and capabilities include the Navy Gage and Standards Laboratory, the Weapons Surveillance and Testing Laboratory, and a Calibration Laboratory which supports the Pacific Fleet.
