The New York Air National Guard participated in Exercise TAPIO for the third year during the month of August 2023, in Campo Grande, Brazil conducting combat search and rescue exercises with their Brazilian Air Force counterparts.

The American component, led by Col. Jeff Cannet, the 106th Operations Group commander, included 100 Airmen, one HC-130J Combat King II search and rescue aircraft, two HH-60 Pave Hawk search and rescue helicopters, and two C-17 Globemaster III transport aircraft. The three helicopters were flown to Campo Grande, on board the two C-17 Globemaster III aircraft flown by 14 members of the New York Air National Guard's 105th Airlift Wing.

Personnel from the New York Air National Guard's 274th Air Support Operations Squadron, who specialize on calling in airstrikes, and the 107th Attack Wing, which flies the MQ-9 Reaper remotely piloted aircraft, also participated in the mission.

This year, for the first time, Security Forces personnel from the 106th Rescue Wing were sent to train with Brazilian Air Force Security Forces. They conducted Forward Area Refueling Point (FARP) exercises which are designed to provide fuel and ordinance when air-to-air refueling or traditional refueling options are not feasible. Fly Away Security (FAS) training was also conducted. FAS missions are conducted by security forces to protect aircrew and aircraft in hostile environments.

The Airmen, most of whom are assigned to the 106th Rescue Wing, conducted missions simulating the recovery of downed aircrew, conducted aerial refueling of search and rescue helicopters, trained Brazilian parachute rescue personnel and conducted on the ground security exercises, as part of the New York National Guard’s State Partnership with Brazil.
