Alaska National Guard inspires drug-free future for students
The Alaska National Guard's Counterdrug Support Program partnered with the Drug Enforcement Agency and local first responders to champion Red Ribbon Week at Meadow Lake Elementary School in Wasilla, Oct. 24, 2023. Matanuska-Susitna Borough Mayor Edna DeVries launched the event by reading a proclamation to the students, and Alaska Air National Guard Tech Sgt. Elijah Gutierrez, a civil operator in the Drug Demand Reduction Outreach section of Counterdrug Support Program, spoke to students about making healthy choices. An Alaska Army National Guard LUH-72 Lakota helicopter transported DEA personnel to the event, providing students a first-hand view of the insertion and extraction. On Nov. 1, Municipality of Anchorage Mayor Dave Bronson greeted the DEA personnel as they exited the helicopter at Airport Heights Elementary School. The AKNG supported programs at other area elementary schools: the Mat-Su’s Snowshoe and Butte and Anchorage School District’s Nunaka and Muldoon. The events showcased a range of educational activities, engaging presentations, and interactive demonstrations to encourage students to make healthy choices and stay drug-free.
