During Arctic Edge 2024 joint forces and Department of Defense partners in the medical field came together at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska, to experiment new equipment and technologies during Below Zero Medicine to better emergency medical treatment in the Arctic. Joint service members participating in the exercise speak to their experience with BZM and conducting medical operations in an Arctic environment. One of the scenarios during the exercise simulated a building collapse with the search and rescue, first-aid, evacuation, and further medical treatment of simulated victims as participants used, tested, and evaluated some the new technologies and equipment. AE24 is a NORAD and U.S. Northern Command-led homeland defense exercise demonstrating the U.S. military’s capabilities in extreme cold weather, joint force readiness, and U.S. military commitment to mutual strategic security interests in the Arctic region.
