Sgt. Jacob Campbell, assigned to the 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, headquartered in Vicenza, Italy, talks about his experiences thus far in the 2024 International Sniper Competition at Fort Moore, Ga. (Campbell's partner Spc. Jacob Henze is also pictured.) The International Sniper Competition, April 5-11, tests competitor teams’ ability to navigate a rigorous gauntlet of events including long-range marksmanship, observation skills, stealth movement, and reconnaissance and reporting ability. Competitors must have successfully passed the Sniper course in the military occupational specialties of 11X Infantry Soldier, 19D Cavalry Scout, or 18X Special Forces to participate. Snipers increase lethality by supporting larger military force elements. By scouting out enemy positions and relaying critical information to other components of a larger force, information gathered by snipers directs mortar fire, artillery strikes, and infantry engagements to destroy the enemy force. The competition features realistic scenarios snipers might encounter on the battlefield to give spectators a behind-the-scenes glimpse of everything that contributes to a sniper team’s success.
