Holding the line: a family business

Capt Mark Bautista, one of the 27th Special Operations Medical Group’s aeromedical physician assistants, ensures our #AirCommandos are constantly ready to execute the Nation’s most sensitive missions around the world at a moment’s notice. But Mark was no stranger to special operations before his time at Cannon.

Like the original Steadfast Line, the Bautista family’s legacy of service began in the Battle of Bataan, where Mark’s great-grandfather fought as a Philippine Scout–an early evolution of what would become modern special operations. Mark’s great-grandfather survived the war, including the infamous 1942 Bataan Death March, where the Imperial Japanese forced over 75,000 U.S. and Filipino soldiers to march over 65 miles while being tortured and starved.

Last year, Mark honored his great-grandfather’s story by completing the annual Bataan Memorial Death March in White Sands, NM, alongside his son. Today, Mark feels privileged to serve as an Air Commando at the 27th SOW, where he gets to directly continue his family’s heritage of holding the line every day.
