Forty National Guard members from across the United States attended an Operationalizing Women, Peace and Security (OpWPS) 100 course hosted by U.S. Northern Command at Fort Lesley J. McNair in Washington, D.C., from May 7-10. This course was uniquely adapted to emphasize foundational knowledge and practical skills for integrating gender considerations into U.S. domestic relief, response, and recovery operations, and to align with the 2023 U.S. Strategy and National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security and USNORTHCOM command priorities. Throughout the week, WPS experts from the Office of the Secretary of Defense, Departments of the Army and Air Force, combatant commands, and the National Guard trained military and civilian personnel from the National Guard and active and reserve components via lectures, case studies, and practical exercises on how to integrate WPS principles into defense support to civil authorities and domestic operations missions, as well as security cooperation efforts, internal organizational operations, and leadership engagement.

The OpWPS 100 course focuses on the principles of the WPS agenda, emphasizing the critical role of women in conflict prevention, peacebuilding, and post-conflict and crisis reconstruction through the 2020 DoD WPS Strategic Framework and Implementation Plan's three defense objectives; to exemplify a diverse organization that allows for women’s meaningful participation across the joint force, to help our partners to do the same, and to ensure the safety, security and human rights of women and girls, especially during conflict and crisis.
