U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class Ryan Phillips (point of view) and Sgt. Brandon Valverde, Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) mountaineers, create multiple hauling systems using various ropes and other mountaineering equipment during a recovery mission in South Korea, June 24, 2024. The hauling systems can be used to hoist team members up a mountain slope in case of emergency. DPAA mountaineers were essential in the recovery mission’s progress due to the unstable terrain associated with the incident of loss. The team used these mountaineers to safely travel up and down the mountainside throughout the mission. There are approximately 7,400 unaccounted-for personnel from the Korean War.
