Sgt. Maj. Milton Holland served in Company C of the 5th United States Colored Troops, also known as the 127th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. On Sept. 29, 1864, during the Battle of New Market Heights, Va., Holland took command of his company after all the officers had been killed or wounded and gallantly led it through the battle.
