The Washington National Guard conducted a promotion ceremony for Col. Matthew James who promoted from Colonel to Brigadier General on Oct. 10, 2024 at Camp Murray, WA. The music was performed by the 133d Washington Army National Guard Band and the invocation was given by Maj. Drew Paulson, the 96th Aviation Troop Command chaplain. The presiding official for the ceremony was Brig. Gen. Paul Sellers, commanding general of the Washington Army National Guard. Maj. Gen. John Bowlin, Texas Army National Guard, commanding general of the 36th Infantry Division, was in attendance to administer the oath of office to Brig. Gen. Matthew James.
Brig. Gen. James commissioned as an infantry officer at Fort Benning, Georgia in 1998. His first duty assignment was Fort Drum, New York where he served as a rifle platoon leader, company executive officer, and reconnaissance platoon leader in 2-14 Infantry Battalion. During this time, he deployed to Kosovo as part of KFOR rotation 38. His second duty station was Fort Lewis, Washington where he deployed twice with 3-2 SBCT in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, to include three company commands in 5-20 Infantry Battalion. He entered the Washington Army National Guard in 2008 and was first assigned to the 81st Brigade Combat Team in 2011 where he has served as a battalion executive officer, brigade plans officer, brigade executive officer, battalion commander, and brigade commander. He also served as the Washington Army National Guard G3, director of operations. Brig. Gen. James will step into a new role as the assistant division commander of the 36th Infantry Division with the Texas Army National Guard.
