U.S. Soldiers assigned to the 178th Engineer Battalion, South Carolina Army National Guard, assist emergency response teams the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, Greenville, South Carolina, Sept. 30, 2024. The engineers provide additional, removal, reduction and disposal of debris capabilities to the South Carolina Emergency Management Division. Helene made landfall on Sept. 26, 2024, in Florida as a category 4 hurricane. The storm caused an unprecedented number of power outages affecting over 1.2 million people in South Carolina, and over 3 million across Tennessee, Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina.
