1st Battalion, The Royal Yorkshire Regiment, 1 R Yorks, held a memorial service for Lieutenant Gareth Evans and Staff Sgt. Balaram Rai in Negrovce, Kosovo. These British soldiers died 25 years ago in 1999 during the Kosovo conflict. Staff Sgt. Rai's nephew, Corporal Bishwaraj Rai, laid a wreath at the site of the memorial. This marks 25 years of British military service to the NATO-led Kosovo Force mission, also known as KFOR.
KFOR continues to implement its mandate - based on UN Security Council Resolution 1244 of 1999 - to contribute to a safe and secure environment for all people and communities living in Kosovo and freedom of movement, at all times and impartially. KFOR is the third security responder, after the the Kosovo Police and the EU Rule of Law (EULEX) mission, respectively, with whom we work in close coordination.
