In 1944, 11 U.S. Soldiers from the 333rd field Artillery Battalion were tortured and killed in Wereth, Belgium. In 1994, a monument was built by the family who sheltered them before their capture to honor their sacrifice. The site is now dedicated to the 1.2 million Black soldiers who fought in WWII—the only known monument of its kind in Europe. (U.S. Air Force video by Senior Airman Christina Carter)
