Army General Mark A. Milley became the 20th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Oct. 1, 2019. Prior to assuming the role as the principal military advisor to the President, Secretary of Defense, and National Security Council, Milley served as the 39th Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army. On the morning of July 12, a fire was called away aboard USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6) while it was moored pierside at Naval Base San Diego. Base and shipboard firefighters responded to the fire. USS Bonhomme Richard is going through a maintenance availability, which began in 2018.
