Rct. Angel Flores, Platoon 1077, Alpha Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion, swims toward Staff Sgt. Melisa Cancienne, a Marine combat instructor of water survival, during the basic water survival qualification Aug. 12, 2013, at the recruit training pool on Parris Island, S.C. Recruits who do not complete the 25-meter swim the first time try again under one-on-one supervision from an instructor. Recruits learn basic water survival skills, and the qualification is one of the requirements to graduate training. Cancienne is a 27-year-old native of Deerfield Beach, Fla. Flores, an 18-year-old native of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., is scheduled to graduate Oct. 11, 2013. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent for females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Lance Cpl. MaryAnn Hill)
