The guide is the formation's base in drill movements. Close-order drill is a key part of Marine Corps recruit training because it develops discipline, confidence, teamwork and respect for authority. Byrne is from Williamsburg, Va., and is scheduled to graduate Aug. 21, 2013. Approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training.
