Cpl. Samuel Robertson, A-Gunner, 2nd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment is pinned with a Purple Heart medal at Lance Cpl. Torrey L. Gray Field Aug. 26, 2013. The Marines earned the medals for their actions while deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Robertson’s mine resistant, ambush-protected vehicle was hit by an 80-pound improvised explosive device Feb. 2. Cutler and Schafer were also hit by I.E.D’s while riding in an MRAP March 24. “The Purple Heart was established by Gen. George Washington and is a very respected medal,” Smith said. “We have a lot of good Marines in this unit and we will continue to do what we are trained to do.”
