Nimitz at the unveiling of his statue during the USS Missouri Memorial Association 68th anniversary celebration commemorating the end of World War II, Monday, Sept. 2 at the Battleship Missouri Memorial, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Fleet Adm. Chester W. Nimitz not only directed the war in the Pacific but also commanded the largest ocean area and most ships of any single commander in the history of the world.
