Gunnery Sgt. Nathaniel Keller, one of four drillmasters, grades a platoon on a drill movement Sept. 4, 2013, during the final drill evaluation for Delta Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion, on Parris Island, S.C. A drillmaster is an expert on the Marine Corps Drill and Ceremonies Manual. Close-order drill is used throughout recruit training as a way to instill discipline, confidence and teamwork. Keller is a 35-year-old native of Greenville, S.C. Delta Company is scheduled to graduate Sept. 13, 2013. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training.
