During a ceremony this morning at the 185th Air Refueling Wing of the Iowa Air National Guard in Sioux City, Iowa, the United States flag was lowered to half-staff in order remember the 2,977 victims of the terrorist attacks on our nation that occurred on 11 September 2001. A proclamation from the Adjutant General of the state of Iowa Major General Tim Orr, read in part “This date is not a holiday and schools and businesses are not closed. This date does provide us with the opportunity to reflect on the victims of this attack as well as those who served and gave the ultimate sacrifice supporting the Global War on Terrorism. As Americans, we chose to commemorate this day with act of service and remembrance.
Many 185th unit members at the ceremony have deployed to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan over the past decade and continue to serve. Major General Orr’s proclamation went on to commend unit members and their families for their sacrifices over the past decade and their decision to continue to serve.
Major Stephen Peters 185th ARW Wing Chaplain led a short prayer and moment of silence as part of the ceremony. (Air National Guard photo by MSgt. Bill Wiseman/ Released)
