Sgt. John Carbiener, Mine Detection handler, and Hershey, his MMD partner, 49th MMD Detachment, 5th Engineer Battalion, 4th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, hunker down for a rotary-winged aircraft training flight. The K9 unit spent several hours with the National Guard flight crew taking their military working dog partners so the dogs can become more familiarized with this necessary part of the dog’s deployment requirements. Carbiener says Hershey relaxes in flight due to the fact his dog has one deployment and both of them moved around every couple of weeks for the entire year. “Sometimes it takes two or three helicopters to get where we were going so she’s been on a lot of flights,” said Carbiener, Aug. 27, 2013.
