Rct. Anthony Mena, left, and Rct. Cody Zeafla, both with Platoon 1078, Alpha Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion, discuss their plan to get to certain coordinates during land navigation training Sept. 16, 2013, on Parris Island, S.C. This training is part of their Basic Warrior Training week during which they learn rudimentary combat skills. Mena, a 17-year-old native of Queens, N.Y., and Zeafla, a 20-year-old native of Gowanda, N.Y., are scheduled to graduate Oct. 11, 2013. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent of females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Lance Cpl. MaryAnn Hill)
