The figure of a U.S. Marine stands sentinel in the dark and tumultuous world of a painting featured in the Combat Arts exhibit in the Southwestern University art gallery Sept. 14, 2013. The paintings in the exhibit were all created by groups of Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder. Combat Arts San Diego is a nonprofit organization that provides visual arts classes to active and inactive duty veterans who have served in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, and was founded on the principal that making art is inherently therapeutic.
