Soldiers participating in the B Company, 1st Battalion, 20th Special Forces Group (Airborne), Special Forces Readiness Evaluation patrol the Stanly County Airport in New London, N.C., on Sept. 14, 2013, while carrying a 45-pound rucksack, as part of a team event designed to challenge them both physically and mentally. The evaluation lasted three days and prior to this event the soldiers had already conducted an Army Physical Fitness Test, a six-mile road march, spent more than an hour swimming and had less than four hours of sleep. Only eight of the 18 soldiers who started the evaluation completed it, and not all of them will be recommended to attend Special Forces Assessment and Selection.
