The ceremonial king of the East is carried to the center of festivities as he prepares to demonstrate his strength and skill, Oct. 13, at Naha City, Okinawa, during the 43rd annual Naha Otsunahiki, or Naha Giant Tug-of-War. The event symbolizes a struggle between warring factions during the reign of the Ryukyu Kingdom on Okinawa. The event is considered the world’s largest tug-of-war, using a 200-meter-long, 43-ton rope.
