Lance Cpl. Michael Shriver, mortarman, Weapons Company, 1st Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, and a native of Dundee, N.Y., plots grid coordinates during the fire direction control portion of the infantry mortars course here, Oct. 31, 2013. The FDC portion of the course familiarizes Marines with computing the location of an enemy threat and relaying that information to the Marines firing the mortars. The three-week course gives the Marines experience in performing multiple roles within the mortar platoon ranging from fire direction to operating the mortar systems.
