A mortar fighting position, set up by the mortar platoon, Company C, 1st Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 3-2 Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 7th Infantry Division, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash., during field training exercises at Yakima Training Center, Oct. 10, 2013. A MFP is a circular pit dug deep enough to emplace a mortar tube, with two personnel shelters opposite each other on the edges of the firing pit for protection against direct and indirect fires. The MFP is usually surrounded on three or more sides by defensive fighting positions, and is sometimes camouflaged against detection using the local terrain for camouflage.
