Astwell Castle Farm (located about one mile east of the village of Helmdon) is shown as it sits today, however on Nov. 30, 1943, it was a much different scene. A B-17 bomber from the 327th Bombardment Squadron, VIII Bomber Command, departed RAF Poddington, located east of Northampton, for a bombing mission to Germany when it crashed at the farm. Members of the 422nd Air Base Group and local villages held a memorial service in the Parish Church of St. Mary Magdalene in Helmdon Nov. 2 to honor the airmen killed. (U.S. Air Force photo by Tech. Sgt. Chrissy Best)
