Drill instructors motivate Rct. Ethan Kendrick, Platoon 1001, Alpha Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion, as he struggles to lift a barbell during a strenuous circuit course Nov. 7, 2013, on Parris Island, S.C. Dynamic courses such as these prepare recruits for the tough, physically demanding standards of the Marine Corps. Recruits endure many rigorous physical training sessions during their journey to claim the title of United States Marine. Kendrick, an 18-year-old native of Novi, Mich., is scheduled to graduate Jan. 24, 2014. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent of females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Lance Cpl. MaryAnn Hill)
